I Wonder, is a series of images by Katherine Mo, that displays an individual’s yearning for companionship through virtual reality. The connection between the figure and their virtual companion references the ever advancing world of technology; Although artificial intelligence has yet to develop towards full autonomy, will there be a point where it achieves sentience? Even if not complete sentience, is that enough for an individual to place a higher value over the physical world?
Shot through the lens of a camera as a nod towards the lens in a virtual reality headset; The work presented is created by merging two or several photos. This process allows the glitch effect shown by the hologram to be created, by distorting several layers of the figure through the use of Photoshop. The glitched layers are then further distorted through the use of layer mixing, merging the layers together to create the look of the hologram.
The images project the connection between two figures, one real and other virtual. Shown by the closeness and action in which the human interacts with the hologram. However, the hologram can only be seen through the lens of a virtual reality headset, this is to showcase the struggle the human figure encounters; Whether to accept reality or fully let themselves go into virtual reality. The travel both figures experience, as it takes them across several sceneries, is to solidify the human’s commitment to their virtual companion.
